주변의 황량하고 오염된 환경에도 불구하고 아이는 외로운 나무에게 다가가 손을 뻗는다. 산업화와 자연 사이의 이러한 병치는 대기 오염 문제와 탄소 배출의 파괴적인 영향을 포함하여 현재 우리가 직면하고 있는 심각한 환경 문제를 강조한다. 이러한 환경에서 아이의 존재는 이전 세대의 행동으로 인해 암울한 미래를 물려받은 현세대를 상징한다. 그러나 외로운 나무는 이 암울한 환경에서 희망의 빛을 제공한다. 아이의 뻗은 손은 행동을 취하고 변화를 일으키며 자연과 손을 뻗어 연결하고 단기적인 경제적 이익보다 환경 보호를 우선시해야 할 필요성을 상징한다.
